Dental implants have slowly become the standard in care for replacing missing teeth. In cases where patients are missing one, two, or several teeth, dental implants are able to restore normal form and function without requiring the shaping or changing of the surrounding teeth. Implants have essentially three parts: the implant, the retainer, and the crown. The implant is the actual “screw” that is surgically placed into the edentulous area under the gums. Once the implant is healed, patients can restore the implant with a crown. To put a crown/tooth on an implant requires two items: a retainer and a crown. The retainer is the metal piece that is screwed into the implant and is the foundation for the crown to be permanently cemented on top.
